Small Boat Cruise to Abu Simbel

Visiting one of the world’s most famous ancient monuments

Six cruise ships transport thousands of tourists across Lake Nasser to visit the world-famous Temples at Abu Simbel. They cruise down the middle of the lake only stopping at ancient temple sites. Our small boat safaris offer a much more worthwhile adventure than travelling down the middle of the lake in a stereotypical cruise ship….

On a small boat safari there is a lot to see and do; in many ways, it’s like visiting a game park which you explore from your own live aboard boat.  For meals join the social atmosphere of a well-appointed mother ship where you can have sundowners as you watch spectacular desert sunsets followed by a night sky full of brilliantly bright stars; then sleep peacefully in your liveaboard boat with no crowed cabins next door.

Explore this amazing desert lake and visit the spectacular Temples of Abu Simbel; carved out of solid rock four immense statues of Ramses II address the lake, designed as a show of strength, an awesome sentinel watching over any boats sailing into the Pharaoh’s lands. Millions of people visit these temples every year and are awestruck by their grandeur and alignment with the constellations.

Abu Simbel Cruise

During the day there are plenty of opportunities to explore the desert lake’s shore line; water has washed away the top soil to reveal fossils of bygone eras. Also, Stone Age drawings and more recent hieroglyphics, carved by ancient Egyptians during their trading expeditions can be found.

The lake is blessed with vast areas of natural beauty, shorelines with a diversity of desert landscapes, from hilly and rugged to sandy with dunes cascading into the lake forming beautiful freshwater beaches.

There are an impressive variety of birds, mammals, and reptiles. Over 100 species of birds have been recorded and the area is an important staging point for migrant and over-wintering birds. The predators are crocodiles, monitor lizards, jackals, Hyena and desert fox. Other species of wildlife include Dorcas gazelle, and many other smaller desert mammals inhabit the shoreline and islands.

Transient peasant fishermen fish the lake using traditional rowing boats; there is no modern commercial fishing. The residents are Desert Bedouin camel and sheep herdsmen who graze their flocks on the sparse vegetation growing on the shoreline.

You will meet the desert Bedouin and the fishermen who are remarkably hospitable; they are just as interested in meeting you as you will be to meet them.  An unforgettable and rewarding holiday experience.

House Boats are a perfect choice for families or a group of friends, the more people who share a house boat the less expensive it becomes for each person. House boats have two spacious cabins sleeping four people comfortably. They are fitted with a toilet & shower and a small galley with amenities for making tea or coffee; there is also an ice box filled with cold drinks. The sun deck has a comfortable shaded area which is ideal for relaxing and sun bathing. A house boat is perfect for exploring the lake, big enough to be comfortable but also small enough to reach shallow areas, where you are more likely to see wild life and get close enough for that memorable photograph.

Safari Boats are smaller than the house boats and were originally designed for fishing. Ideal for those who would like to try their luck for Nile perch or Tiger fish while on safari. Safari boats have a cabin with two large single bunks which sleep two people comfortably. Safari boats can accommodate three people with an extra mattress on the top deck under the desert stars which is a unique and peaceful experience; it never rains in the desert. Unlike the house boats, safari boats do not have an on board toilet and shower, these facilities are provided for on the mother ship.

Solo Travellers are welcome:    Pay for one place from the price band for 2 sharing a fishing boat plus the single anglers supplement. You then have the option of using the fishing boat for your own personal use, or we can advertise to find a suitable partner for you to fish with; if we find someone then neither of you will pay for the fishing boat single supplement.
Family Discount:    The best way for families to come on a safari is to charter a house boat for their own private use. Adults pay the full amount under the price band of the number of family members travelling together and each child who is 18 years old or younger gets a 20% discount off the same price band.
Organizer:    If you have a group of six or more friends coming on the same safari with you take advantage of our organizer discount. For six or more adults who book a safari together we will give the organizer (or the sixth person) a 20% discount off the cost of their safari.

Live Aboard Fishing Boats

There are two options for the fishing boat unit you can charter for your safari; live aboard boats are for your own private use. In each case you share a mother ship for night stops, your meals and resting up with a cold beer. For more detailed information refer to Safari Boats & Guides.

Fishing Boats:      Most anglers choose the option of chartering fishing boats which can comfortably accommodate up to three anglers; the ideal fishing combination is two anglers sharing one fishing boat.

Fishing Boat & Stealth Boat Como:     Stealth Boats are an alternative fishing platform which can fish hot spots more quietly and efficiently than larger fishing boats, they can be quietly drifted or rowed over underwater promontories or past rocky drop-offs, allowing anglers to cast without the commotion caused by a bigger boat. Stealth boats carry two anglers and are skippered by an experienced fishing guide and can easily be towed by your fishing boat or house boat between fishing grounds.

House Boat & Stealth Boat Combo:      Provides you with comfortable facilities to relax in after a hard day ‘fly flinging.’ House boats sleep four comfortably in two twin cabins, there is also on board toilet and shower and a small galley for making coffee or tea. Ideal for a small group of fishing friends and also popular with those who want their family to join in the adventure; while the family explores the lake in a comfortable house boat, you can go fishing in a stealth boat with your fishing guide.

Solo Anglers are welcome:     Pay for one place from the price band for 2 sharing a fishing boat plus the single anglers supplement. You then have the option of using the fishing boat for your own personal use, or we can advertise to find a suitable partner for you to fish with; if we find someone then neither of you will pay for the fishing boat single supplement.
Family Discount:     The best way for families to come on a fishing safari is to charter the House Boat & Fishing Boat Combo for your own private use. While some of you go fishing the rest of the family can explore the lake in comfortable house boat. Adults pay the full amount under the price band of the number of family members travelling together and each child who is 20 years old or younger will get a 20% discount off the same price band.
Organizer: If you have a group of six or more adults coming on the same safari the ‘organizer’ who is the 6th person gets a 20% discount off the cost of their safari.

"What happened next will stay with me to the end of my life. One second the lure was wobbling quietly towards me, perhaps 25 yards away. The next it was hit with unbelievable power...." Dr Barrie Rickards Ph.D., D.Sc. (Cambridge) "Kings of the Nile” Coarse Fishing

Our most popular fishing safari is the Lake Nasser Fishing Safari, an old favourite designed for anglers who would like to come on their own or with a friend and then join in the atmosphere of a sociable camp with other fishermen; if you are traveling alone you will be welcome on this safari. If you are limited for time you can include a short fishing safari into your holiday itinerary for Egypt.

Alternatively, you can charter one or more live aboard fishing boats supported by a Mother Ship for your own private use and come on a Private Fishing Safari which can start or end on any day of the year and last for as long as is required. This safari offers a degree of independence which many anglers prefer and is perfect for a small group of friends or a family who would like to set out and explore the lake, at their own pace, on a fishing adventure which has few equals anywhere .

What Can I Expect To Catch?    We are often asked this question, fishing being fishing, who knows for sure? Most anglers can expect to capture at least one Nile perch of 50lb. beyond that, anything’s possible – perhaps even another world record? We do not like to promise Nile perch of 100 pounds plus - they are there and they are often caught - we have broken the last 3 (IGFA approved) Nile perch all tackle world records with fish of over 200 pounds.
It is almost impossible to answer the question “how many fish can I expect to catch in a day” or "how big will they be". Some days you might catch nothing at all and the next day might produce 8 /10 fish up to 100lbs or even more. Also, a lot will depend on the size of the fish that you are targeting – the bigger the fish you target the less you will catch.
We operate three styles of fishing safari, each with slightly different options. Or, if you are just passing through Aswan and don’t have enough time you can come for one day fishing.

Lake Nasser Safari
This safari is for anglers who would like to come on their own or with a friend and join in the atmosphere of a sociable camp with other fishermen. If you would like to book a single place on one of these safaris you are welcome.
You have two options ….
(1) Make your own arrangements to reach Aswan to join this safari. We will meet you at the airport, your hotel or Nile cruise ship and then transfer you to and from the safari start point on the lake for a 5 nights and 6 days fishing safari only.
(2) Come on a 7 nights & 8 day package which include all your arrangements (not flights) from your arrival in Egypt until you board your homebound flight.

Short Fishing Safari
Our short safaris are designed to be included into your holiday itinerary for Egypt. These shorter safaris give you the flexibility to choose how long you stay on the Lake. The minimum charter is two nights & three days.
3 days & 2 nights: Starts weekly on Saturday
4 days & 3 nights: Starts weekly on Tuesday
5 days & 4 nights: Starts weekly on Sunday
If you would like to combine your fishing holiday with visiting some of ancient Egypt’s ancient monuments then let us know; living in Egypt we are in a good position to offer you good advice.

Nubian Safari (Private Safari)
Charter one or more fishing boats supported by a Mother Ship for your own private use. This safari can start or end on any day of the year and last for as long as is required which is ideal for anglers who would like to have the flexibility of deciding how long they want to stay on the lake. The Nubian Safari offers a degree of independence which many anglers prefer and is perfect for a small group of friends who would like to set out and explore the lake, at their own pace, on a private fishing adventure that has few equals anywhere.

Single Travellers are welcome:

On two of our safaris the Abu Simbel Safari and the Lake Nasser Safari, pay for one place from the price of 2 sharing a live aboard fishing boat plus the single boat supplement. You then have the option of using the fishing boat and guide for your own personal use, or we can try to find a suitable partner; if we find someone then neither of you will pay the single boat supplement.

Discounts:
Family: Adults pay the full amount under the price band of the number of family members travelling together and each child who is 20 years old or younger will get a 20% discount off the same price band.
Father and Son or Daughter:     This has been popular with Dad’s who would like to take their son (or daughter) on a fishing adventure. To qualify for a discount the child’s age must be under 21 years of age. The child or children sharing a boat with Dad each gets a 20% discount from the selected safari price. The Father pays the full amount under the price band for 2 anglers sharing a fishing boat.
Organizer:     If you have a group of six or more adults coming on the same safari the ‘organizer’ who is the 6th person gets a 20% discount off the cost of their safari.

"Egypt was the trip of a lifetime - you most certainly know how and where to push the boundaries of sport; dare I say it unrivalled in my experience. Genuinely an incredible week epic in all and every way; I cannot begin to imagine what goes on behind the scene to pull a trip like that off but it was impressive. An execution of seamless effort and on behalf of all of us on the trip I congratulate you. Thanks for what has so far been the trip of a lifetime....that is, of course, until next time!" How a Desert Lake Private Charter Works

Explore the lake in your own private live aboard boat then at lunch time and in the evening meet up with a well-appointed mother ship for meals and drinks in comfortable social surroundings.

Mother Ships. Our concept of having an independent unit taking care of catering and recreation is unique on Lake Nasser. With cruise ships everything is cramped together in one unit with little privacy. Cruise ships, big or small, are too cumbersome to get close to wild life and manoeuvre in shallower water where all the action is. Our live aboard boats are perfect for getting a close-up experience of this magnificent desert lake.

Camps are located on sandy beaches where it is safe to swim in the lakes clean fresh water. There are plenty of opportunities to walk along the desert shore; in some places the water has washed away the top soil to reveal plant and animal fossils of bygone eras. Also, stone age rock drawings and more "modern" Hieroglyphics carved by ancient Egyptians during their trading expeditions can be found.

During the two annual bird migrations between Africa and the northern hemisphere you will be amazed by the millions of birds passing through this desert lake.

The weather is always sunny; most areas have not seen any rain for five or more years. Spectacular sunsets are followed by a dazzling night sky full of brilliantly bright stars; no light pollution from cities a phenomenon few people have experienced.

“The kind of hospitality shown by Tim and his guides is seldom seen these days and the atmosphere was incredibly friendly". Steve Pitts.
