Camp site with mother ship, house and stealth boatsCamp site with mother ship, house and stealth boatsIn the footsteps of Agatha Christie’s classical narrative ‘Death on the Nile’ the Ta Seti safari cruise follows the exact same route as the characters in this famous story. Lake Nasser has flooded the original Nile river route portrayed in the story but the experience is still as spectacular as it was at the turn of the century; exploring a stretch of the River Nile (now Lake Nasser) which the ancient Egyptians called ‘Ta-Seti’ (land of the bow) after the favourite weapon of the Nubian warriors of that time.
A highlight is visiting the Temples of Abu Simbel which are among the most magnificent ancient monuments in the world. Carved out of solid rock four immense statues of Ramses II address the lake, originally designed as a show of strength, an awesome sentinel watching over any boats sailing into the Pharaoh’s lands.
On this safari you will get a close up insight into Lake Nasser, its nomadic people, prolific bird life and wild animals. Days are spent exploring the vast picturesque desert lake in your ‘live aboard’ safari boat then at lunch time and in the evening you meet up with the mother ship where meals and drinks are enjoyed in comfortable social surroundings.

Basheria BedouinBasheria BedouinThe next five days are spent cruising between Aswan and Abu Simbel, the total cruising time to Abu Simbel is approximately 25 hours. On average you will be cruising on the lake at a leisurely pace for about 5 hours a day. Interspersed between these daily travelling times you are free to explore the lake, go for walks, wild life viewing, visiting the local Bedouin or fishermen or simply take in the incredible scenery.
Lunch and dinner is served on the first day.

Day 2 – Wednesday
Cruising south down the lake pass through El Madig which the narrowest part of the lake less than a kilometre wide, visiting interestingly named places like Snake Island, Bird Shit Island which is bleached white with guano, local fisherman’s camps, and so on. All meals and hot beverages are included on the safari.

Day 3 – Thursday
Cruise on to Wadi As-Subua which means ‘Valley of Lions’ in Arabic passing through areas which are prolific with bird life. Then on to Krosko which is an area of spectacular desert grandeur, sweeping sand dunes to the west and rugged, tall hills of sandstone and granite to the east; this area is also famous for its huge Nile crocodiles. In the evening relax with a glass of wine or a cold beer and watch a spectacular desert sunset followed by a clear night sky full of brilliant stars; in this part of the world there is absolutely no light pollution from cities.

Day 4 – Friday
Visit Qasr Ibrim an ancient fortress settlement situated at a strategic point overlooking the Nile which sits with water lapping at its edges on what was once the top of a 70m-high cliff. The origins of this fortress go back to 1000BC when the Egyptians first started to build a series of mud- brick fortresses along the Nile to maintain their control over the area. Here we have found Stone Age rock drawings and an ancient grave yard which has been desecrated by grave robbers leaving bones and sculls scattered over the desert. These are not places visited by normal tourists.

This itinerary also operates in the reverse direction starting from Abu Simbel and ending in Aswan, otherwise the content is the same.

Boat Safari Units

Boat safari units are made up of ‘live aboard’ boats which are supported by a Mother Ship. For your ‘live aboard’ you can charter either a House Boat or a Safari Boat. Each ‘live aboard’ boat is skippered by an English speaking Nubian guide with extensive knowledge of the wildlife, places of interest and the desert Bedouin who live on the lakes shoreline.

Safari Crew
An important requirement for a successful safari is the crew who run the safari. We have taken this seriously devoting a lot of time and effort in selecting and training our team; well over half our safari crew has been with us for ten years or more.
African Angler Safari crew and guides are all Nubians who are the people that inhabited the Nile Valley before it was flooded by Lake Nasser. The Nubian people have a proud and rich heritage that dates back to long before the Pharaohs were in control of ancient Egypt. There is an excellent esprit de corps amongst our Nubian staff, they are proud of the work they do and you can’t beat them for their spontaneous and genuine friendship.

Mother Ships are an essential part of a well organized safari unit; they carry the equipment, provisions, fuel and the safari crew leaving the ‘live aboard’ boats free to explore the lakes desert scenery and wildlife. Mother ships are fitted with a built-in kitchen, dining area, toilet, and shower; there is plenty of space on the upper deck to relax sunbathe or just watch the world go by. Most people are pleasantly surprised at the standard of food on safari; the style of cooking is a blend of western taste merged with Nubian cuisine, which is superb.  With approximately one member of staff per person, there is little to do except relax and enjoy your holiday.  Each of our mother ships is equipped with a satellite telephone which can be used if required.

House Boats are an ideal choice for families or a group of friends, the more people sharing a house boat the less expensive it becomes for each person. House boats have two spacious cabins sleeping four people comfortably; they can accommodate up to six people with two sleeping on the sun deck. They are fitted with a toilet & shower and a small galley with amenities for making tea or coffee; there is also an ice box filled with cold drinks. The sun deck has a comfortable shaded area which is ideal for relaxing and sun bathing. A house boat is perfect for exploring the Lake, big enough to be comfortable but also small enough to reach shallow areas, where you are more likely to see wild life and get close enough for that memorable photograph.

Safari Boats are smaller than the house boats; they were originally designed for fishing and will be ideal for those who would like to try their luck fishing. Safari boats have a cabin with two large single bunks, at night the cabin can be enclosed by canvas providing a cosy sheltered sleeping area. There is also space for two sleeping on the top deck under the desert stars which most people find is a unique and peaceful experience; it never rains in the desert. Unlike the house boats, safari boats do not have an on board toilet and shower, these facilities are provided for on the mother ship.

The kind of hospitality shown by Tim and his guides is seldom seen these days and the atmosphere was incredibly friendly ". Steve Pitts.
